This castle dates back to the period of Turkish rule (around 1590) and incorporates parts of the earlier medieval castle. From 1987 until today it hosts part of the Medieval Collection of the Cyprus Museum.

The Medieval Museum exhibits items that reflect the history of the island, the economic, social and religious life and many aspects of daily life from the 3rd to the 18th century AD.

The exhibits include weapons, armor, tools, Byzantine, medieval and Islamic glazed and utility pottery, bronze and glassware, lamps, jewellery, coins, cult objects, as well as architectural members from Byzantine and Gothic buildings.

Legend has it that in this castle King Richard the Lionheart married Princess Berengaria and crowned her Queen of England in 1191.
