Akrotiri habitat: A paradise right next to Limassol in the winter!

Only a few kilometers from the city, a habitat of exceptional beauty with rare biodiversity for the island, is hosted at the Akrotiri peninsula. The meadow, the ponds and salt marshes in the region have become a refuge for hundreds of species of flora and fauna. Especially during the months of autumn and winter, the habitat hosts large groups of migratory birds.

These days one can find in the area many species of ducks, geese, and the magnificent pink flamingos. Although most migratory birds visiting the habitat soon fly away to Africa, flamingos stay for several months, usually until the end of February. Black-winged stilts, glossy ibis, herons and more rarely pelicans and storks are among the 300 species of birds that pass through the habitat, of which 10 live in the lakes.

Apart from the extremely important role of the habitat for the island's wilderness, the sight for those who visit it is unique. The Akrotiri Environmental Information and Education Center provides the necessary equipment and guidance for those who want to discover the beauties of the habitat. Guided by the table with the species hosted in the habitat, guests can spot them through the binoculars from the observatory of the Center.
