The city of Amathus was developed on two levels: the lower city and the upper city (Acropolis). The Acropolis of Amathus, built on a hill east of Limassol, served as a natural fortress and observatory.

When the Acropolis was abandoned in the late 7th century, life shifted to the lower town, which became one of the major city-kingdoms of ancient Cyprus.

Excavations have revealed the Roman market complex, baths, four basilicas, the sanctuary of Aphrodite, an aqueduct, and a port that is now below sea level. Outside the city walls lie the eastern and western necropolises (cemeteries).

At the entrance of the Temple of Venus, there were once two monolithic jars, half-sunken into the earth, so large that they could be recognized from afar. One remains there in pieces, while the second is currently housed in the Louvre Museum.
