At the crossroad of cultures and religions, in a neighborhood on the borderline of old and new, there is now an amazing mosaic full of light and colors. Irenes Square, where the minaret and the belfry stand side by side for decades now, reminds us that people can live harmoniously, no matter their differences and contrasts.
The creation of the mosaic has been an initiative of teachers from 24 primary schools and kindergartens in Limassol, who worked along with their students to accomplish this. The implementation of the mosaic took around 10 months, plenty of good will and effort. The reveal of the art work took place on 13/5/2017 in the presence of the Mayor of Limassol.
The result of this initiative offers a special note in the area, while also enhancing the little square right on Garyllis river bank and showcasing it as a place for recreation and relax, in the heart of the city. The representations are a reminder of the special history of the area on the west side of the city center, with the mosque and the church still marking its multicultural character.
