NEW SPOT: A-la-kati, a new restaurant in Limassol is being set around a traditional well

Α brand new dining experience, the seventh restaurant to complete an already large variety at St Raphael Resort, is about to be an exciting addition in Limassol. The new venue is included in the expansion plans at the resort, as part of a large scale renovation, already in progress. The renovation plans are rapidly processing and the work should be completed in the spring of 2017, before the beginning of the summer season.

“Alakati” outdoor summer restaurant will be specialized in local flavors and cuisine, serving the best that Cyprus has to offer. Its slogan, a word-game that says it all, is “a la Kati, a la Kypriaka”. The actual, traditional “alakati” (the well in the Cypriot language), is featured in the center of the restaurant, made of traditional stone, surrounded by amazing paving style stone and village type flooring.

Alakati used to be an important tool for the agricultural communities in Cyprus for the centuries past. It consists of 2 wooden wheels, a vertical and a horizontal one. On the vertical one, clay containers are bound on ti, so, during the wheel's rotation, they are immersed into the well water and they transport it to the surface. The wheels would rotate motivated by the force provided by an animal, usually a donkey, bound to the well.

According to the managing director of St Raphael’s resort, Farah Shammas, the company invests the amount of €1.5 mil. for the entire renovation plan, a plan that was a dream of her grandfather, Shukri Hanna Shammas.
