The wine of kings and knights, as used to be called, produced for centuries by the varieties that thrive in the wine villages of Limassol, Commandaria, found its own special place in Forbes magazine.
In a related tribute released in the online edition of the internationally renowned magazine in January 2017, the wine critics present Commandaria, as the "legendary wine" you should taste when visiting Cyprus. Particular reference is made to the 14 Commandaria villages in Limassol district, that manufacture this special drink, based on 2 local varieties, mavro blue and white Xynisteri.
The sweet wine manages to impress, thanks to its aromas and taste, a taste so sweet that one only finds in liqueur, and makes an ideal accompaniment to desserts. Referring to its history, the article mentions the "discovery" of Commandaria by the Crusaders, who spread it around, while there are also speculations that it is the oldest wine in the world, since its manufacturing process has not changed much over the centuries.
The tribute also presents as excellent recommendations of Commandaria, several releases by the wineries Agia Mavri (2010), Tsiakkas (2008), ETKO (Agios Nikolaos, 2010, Centurion, 2000), SODAP (Saint Barnabas, 2000 and 2010) and KEO (Saint John).
