Petros Pitsillides, a candle maker coming from a long generation of candle makers, is the craftsman who created a candle which managed to achieve a Guinness award. In 1996, the candle maker, a refugee from Famagusta, located in Limassol, built a candle somewhat taller than 3 meters.
Its construction took 3 months, 300 kg of raw material and a specific technique to be built with wax layers and not in a mold. So, for days and weeks the craftsman was initially dipping the candle in a cauldron with the liquid material, until it had reached such proportions that he needed to pour the material on the wax column, since it was impossible to move it, let alone to dip it in a cauldron.
With patience, love and a lot of skills, Petros Patsalides managed to build the tallest candle that could stand upright, since the base is wider than the top. After the honorary award, the candle was stored in "Melissa" candle shop, in which he keeps his workshop and merchandise in the city center. Since then, he has donated his creation to the Kykkos Holy Monastery with just 1 condition: the candle should only be placed in Apostolos Andreas monastery, after it would be free. Until then, the gigantic candle remains in 38, Ellados street, at the center of Limassol.
