It all started in 1991 with the story of an old lady in Vouni village, who wanted desperately to get rid of her old donkey and due to the fact that she was very connected with it and she could not stand the idea of killing it, she made the decision to give it to a family, in the village next to hers.

This is how the idea of the sanctuary was born, when in 1994 it began with the care of 6 animals and opened its doors officially in 2007 with the help of ‘The Donkey Sanctuary’, which is based in England and gives economical help in all the sanctuaries in countries all over the world. The philosophy of the sanctuary is that all the donkeys that have been abandoned or deal with a problem, they are saved and given the correct treatment.

You are given the chance to promote the work of the sanctuary and become a foster parent of one of the cute animals that live permanently there, by providing the symbolic amount of €24. The adoption can be done electronically, through the website that the Donkey Sanctuary has, or by phone.

Along with the adoption certificate, a small description which refers about the story of your foster ‘child’ and how it ended up in the sanctuary, it will be sent to you. Part of the adoption includes your updating, which can either be done electronically 4 times a year, or by post twice a year with the post of a magazine.

Due to the fact that the sanctuary is closed for the public you are given the alternative to print photos of your donkey. In case that you wish to meet it by close, you can visit the sanctuary and see it from the offices of the team.
