Pavlos Kontides, who was previously awarded with a silver medal at the Olympic Games of London in 2012, achieved the gold medal at the laser class of Sailing World Cup. The event took place in Melbourne, Australia, where Kontides won a head-to-head battle to the 1st place.
During the final race he had to confront Australia’s Tom Burton, the winner of the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Rio last August, who came 10th. Australia’s Mathew Wearn came 2nd with 26 points, while Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic finished on 41 points to earn the bronze.
Kontides right after the race mentioned that he is really happy because this is his 1st gold in any major event for the senior categories. “Ι' ve come close many times, but this is the first time, and I am really happy", he said.
Limassol Nautical Club mentioned that everyone is proud for this great achievement of the 26-year-old Pavlos Kontides and reassured the Club’s support towards the athlete, just as for any other of its athletes.
