The abandoned, for nearly 30 years now, galleries of the mines on Troodos, are now only suitable for hosting populations of bats. Most galleries are in very bad condition and some have already collapsed. Some people, however, are responsible to browse through them and check out the bats that nestle there.
In this eerie scene, many meters below the earth, into the wet and dark arcades, live 19 different species of bats. Some of them are very rare and their population is poor, since they are almost extinct. Bats are essential to the conservation of biodiversity and biological treatment of nature, since there are species that consume beyond 3000 insects. Their teeth are so sensitive that they can only chew mosquitoes and they avoid human presence.
Bats, since only living in the darkness, may be have been related to negative feelings and frightening myths, but they are far from being a disaster for humans. These shy creatures, the rare flying mammals of the ecosystem, deserve to be seen from a different point of view. This photo journey in their habitat can actually be quite revealing.
