Limassol residents came across some whitewashed streets during Tuesday night 10/1 and Wednesday 11/1 morning. After the rapid rainfall of the last about 45 days, the weather was finally a little bit more sunny, but at night the cold is always biting and thunderstorms still occur quite often.
Snow hardly reaches the sea, although the temperature drops low enough in the city too (in 1959 thermometers at the harbor area indicated -2°C). The snow may still be falling, but it is just on the mountains. Nevertheless the hailstorm that occurred in the city, close to the coast, gave an idea of the intense winter of the mountains. The hail struck the city of Limassol on Tuesday night with so violently, that the frozen beads piled up on the side of the streets.
Early in the morning on Tuesday, the weather was quite harsh up in the mountains, with hail falling heavily in Platres. The scenery did change abruptly close to the coast, too, even though the day went by in a rather sunny weather. The night was one of the most winter-like of the past weeks in the city, since the storm of thunders and lightning lasted for a long time and hail covered the streets, cars and balconies. So, just a few dozens of kilometers away from Troodos, the people did see a white landscape in the city, too. Additionally, the low temperature during the night resulted to maintaining the piles of hail in some areas, continuing the impression of a snow-covered landscape in the morning.
