Pink spectacular by flamingos: Akrotiri salt lake came ‘back to life’ thanks to the first rain!

Much needed and utterly beneficial was the first rain falling after the long term summer period on the island. First proof is the arrival of the flamingos at the Akrotiri salt lake, which offer a spectacular view the past few days. Even after a delay, due to the lack of rain, the migratory birds finally appeared in Limassol’s habitat.

During this time, flocks of several kinds of ducks are also arriving in the salt lake and they are very interesting subject for observation as well. The birds use Cyprus and the salt lake in Akrotiri as an interval stop on their way to warmer areas. Consequently, during the entire Cypriot, calm winter, this rare habitat will offer a unique view.

Akrotiri Environmental Education and Information Centre these days is an excellent option for a short trip through the magic of the natural environment of the area, just a few kilometers aςay from the city center. The Center’s officer, Alexis Nikolettis, explained that recently the wooden watchtower near the habitat was restored to host those who wish for a view from high above.
