The people visiting the Limassol seaside early in the morning, began their day with an amazing image. Besides the dozens of regular visitors of the coast, there were 2 rare, black swans around there, too.
These beautiful, travelling birds are not a common sight in Limassol. Even though the saltlake at Akrotiri peninsula is a well-known refuge for birds travelling to warmer areas in the winter, swans do not visit every year and when they do, they are not so many. According to Akrotiri Enviromental Education Center, when swans are spotted in Limassol, they are in rather small groups, mostly in 2 seasons in the year, spring and autumn.
The 2 black swans, floating in the area of Akti Olympion, close to the Limassol Municipal Garden, drew many people’s attention, since most of them, even those working by the sea every single day, did not happen to see swans ever before in their lives.
In order to explain the unexpected appearance of the swans, a primary assumption by Akrotiri Enviromental Education Center led to the possible case of 2 young birds, which are still dark, during the first 2 years of their lives, while after a closer examination the birds could possibly be an Australian species, which might have escaped from the Limassol Zoo.
