Love locks up on Limassol's bridge!

Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of location, from France and Vienna to South Korea. The phenomenon has spread to Limassol, too, where the locks have found a special spot on the CYTA footbridge.

A love lock is found hanging to a bridge, fence, gate, or similar public fixture. Typically the sweethearts' names or initials are inscribed on the lock and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love. The custom seems to have been initiated in Serbia, in the beginning of the previous century, when the unfortunate termination of a love affair led to a woman’s death. The girls of that city would hang the locks on the bridge, to safeguard their affairs.

There seems to be a natural human impulse to give permanent shape to a mutable human emotion. The CYTA footbridge, connecting the beach with the GSO Sports Center has become a favorite spot for love locks. If you cross the bridge at least once, you will know why. The idyllic view both on sunrise or sunset, the endless blue of the day time and the brilliant city lights in the night, create a most romantic scenery and sweethearts sure have chosen a perfect location in Limassol for their love symbols.
