History

According to the book of Agios Theodoros Pitsilias, the village got its name after Agios Theodoros Stratelates. However, some village residents used to honour Agios Theodoros Tironas on the 17th February as well which is the reason why the village was also known as Agioi (Saints) Theodoroi.

Due to the fact that the village is built upon seven hills, some writers would refer to it as the ‘Eptalofi (seven hills) of Pitsilia’ which is also linked to the ‘Eptalofi of Constantinople’.

According to the discoveries of excavations, the village existed since the Roman period (27 BC- 476 AD). However, the settlement existed in the area where the village is built today even after the late Byzantine era but also during the periods of the Venetian, Frankish and Turkish Rule.
