The Byzantine period is characterized by the Byzantine rule and life on the island under its regime. The period begins in 375 AD and is marked by the arrival and the prevalence of the Orthodox Christian church in Cyprus. The era reaches at its end in 1191 AD with the conquest of Cyprus by Richard the Lionheart, who sells the country to the Templars.
